About The Right To The City Alliance (RTTC) 

Right to the City Alliance (RTTC) emerged in 2007 with a strong and powerful vision to 1) halt the displacement of low-income people, Black, Indigenous, and people of color, LGBTQ communities, and youth of color, and 2) protect and expand affordable housing in tandem with a broader movement to build democratic and just healthy communities for the 21st century. 

Since its inception, RTTC has quickly grown to encompass over 90 community-based racial, economic, gender, and environmental justice organizations located in 26 states and 45 cities. Representing true grassroots power and leadership of the most impacted, RTTC’s member organizations weave together local on-the-ground organizing, policy, and advocacy campaigns to build a robust and unstoppable national movement for inclusive, healthy housing and community development.

Position Summary

The RTTC Senior Membership Organizer will coordinate, guide and supervise national organizing staff to implement RTTCs Membership Programming including monthly member calls and trainings, RTTCs all-member assembly (every 3 years), our annual RTTC Governance Assembly. This position will also be an integral team member of the RTTC Membership Team to implement monthly 1:1 engagement with RTTC Member Organizations to support, grow and prepare our membership to participate in our growing movement for dignified, affordable and safe homes for all. We are looking for someone to join our energetic, visionary and solutions-oriented national staff team to help build the powerful movement we need to win the right to the city and liberation for our people. Ideal candidate will be someone who is multifaceted, able to adapt to changing conditions, believes deeply in self-determination and community power, and who embodies a commitment to both personal and systemic transformation.

This position Reports to: Malcolm Chu, the Associate Director of Membership Organizing and participates in the Team(s): RTTC Membership Team, Membership Assembly & Governance Assembly Coordination Teams

Job Responsibilities

1. RTTC Membership Engagement

This Senior Membership Organizer will be an integral part of RTTCs Membership Team responsible for leading an annual membership program to engage, support and organize member organizations to participate in the alliance campaign, engage in the alliance member governance process and advance the alliance strategic objective. 

Work Area: RTTC Membership Programming

• Oversee planning and coordination of RTTC annual member programming including monthly membership calls and designing membership trainings to advance RTTCs strategic objective, alliance goals, and support member organizations to develop their campaign and base-building strategies. 
• Support implementation of transformative organizing programming as assigned by the Membership Organizing Department to support RTTC membership in deepening praxis of transformative base-building and organizing. 

Work Area: RTTC Monthly Membership Engagement, Tracking & Assessment

• Maintain and cultivate relationships with 10-15 active RTTC member organizations, through quarterly check-in meetings that support organizations’ to participate in the alliance campaign, programs and governance. 
• Maintain accurate and up-to-date membership data in RTTCs Membership Database (including contact information, attendance, membership status, organizational information, etc..) 
• Develop regular assessments about the state of RTTC member organizations to share with RTTC Staff & Leadership including: member organization’s organizational health, base-building strength, campaign work, level of alignment with RTTCs strategic objective and principles, and organizational development needs. 

2. RTTC Assembly Supporting & Planning 

• This Senior Membership Organizer will be responsible for leading and designing RTTCs work to carry out statewide renter power assemblies, our annual governance assembly and our every 3 years all-member assembly. RTTC Assemblies are built and inspired by the long-history of people’s assembly praxis born in the global south and US south and are core to RTTCs practice of grassroots democracy, strategy development and movement building. 

Work Area: Statewide Assembly Coordination 

• With support from the Associate Director of Membership Organizing, this position will oversee RTTCs programs, staffing and support for member organizations and hubs organizing statewide ‘renter power’ assemblies. This includes: 
• Development & evaluation of tools, materials and frameworks to support groups in organizing statewide assemblies that advance RTTCs collective campaign, strategic objective and base-building strategy
• Consultation with statewide assembly planning teams to assess needs, offer feedback and support alignment with the alliance strategic objective and campaign
• Coordination and orientation of RTTC staff across the alliance to be able to provide concrete support to statewide assembly planning teams
• Travel to assigned statewide assembly’s to support program implementation and RTTC staff support.

Work Area: RTTC Governance Assembly Planning

This position will be responsible for managing and coordinating the annual Governance Assembly workplan and planning team, including: 

• Coordinate team of RTTC staff & alliance leaders to plan, implement and evaluate RTTCs annual governance assembly - the annual gathering of RTTCs 3 governing bodies that guides the strategic direction of the alliance and makes decisions on the alliance’s infrastructure.
• Lead production of the Governance Assembly synthesis and track progress on action items. 
• Ensure that RTTC Governance Body lists are accurate and up-to-date and support the implementation of RTTC Governance Coordination Systems to ensure they are functioning and maintained with integrity

Work Area: RTTC Membership Assembly Planning

This position will play a key role in organizing RTTCs all-member assembly which happens every 3 years. Specifically this position will be responsible for: 

• Leading and designing the outreach & registration process for RTTC Member Assemblies (every 3 years)
• Lead and design orientations and trainings to prepare member organizations to participate in the assembly 
• Support program planning for RTTC Member Assemblies (every 3 years) as assigned by the MOD Leadership Team. 

3. Supervision of National Organizing Staff & Contractors

The Senior Membership Organizer will be responsible for supervising 1-2 national organizing staff on the RTTC Membership Team to support them to carry out their roles, lead assigned work areas and participate in team and organization-wide responsibilities. RTTC utilizes a comprehensive Supervision Framework and provides supervisors with a monthly supervision support space. 

Additionally, this role will be responsible for managing and supervising contract staff, when appropriate, to carry out assembly planning including event planning contractors, language justice contractors, cultural workers or other appropriate contract staff.

• Organizational participation: (Approx. 10% of time) team planning, staff meetings and trainings, national convenings, collaborative projects across teams, and HR/administrative tasks common to all positions.
• Evolution of the work: Areas of work may change over time based on organization and movement needs, and always in consultation with the organizer.
• Transformative Praxis: Participate in RTTC’s transformative justice program to align our practice with our values and principles. Build staff unity and cohesion, and principled struggle amongst all team/staff members.

Location & Travel: Location is negotiable. RTTC has concentrations of staff in the following areas: Philly, Atlanta, Boston, Brooklyn (physical office), and the SF Bay Area. Travel is required; frequency and duration of travel is negotiable.

Required Experience & Qualifications

• At least 5 - 8 years of base building & organizing experience in a grassroots membership organization and/or membership alliance. 
• At least 6 years experience and demonstrated ability to develop workplans, lead organizing teams, develop movement strategy and/or plan movement convenings / assemblies. 
• At least 4 years of experience on leading on all aspects of campaign development and implementation for local or statewide campaigns - overall strategy and vision, narrative/comms, fundraising, coalition building, political education, etc
• At least 4 years experience supervising other staff 
• Demonstrated ability to translate strategic ideas and concepts into tangible, accessible materials and programming

Preferred Qualifications

• Ability to write and speak a second language, preferably Spanish
• Familiarity with CRM systems and Member Database management (Every Action, Airtable or other tools)
• Some fundraising/grant-writing experience helpful

• Experience and familiarity with housing justice, gentrification, displacement and anti-eviction work and/or grassroots base-building organizations and transformative organizing
• Experience in multi-racial, multicultural settings
• Knowledge of common computer applications: MS Office, Google docs, Adobe Acrobat, Dropbox, Mac environment, and Zoom video tele-conferencing systems
• Access to reliable internet, phone and remote office arrangements. RTTC provides for costs of home offices.
• Drivers license and auto insurance

Salary and Benefits

This is a Full-Time Exempt position. The salary range starts at $98K up to $124K. Compensation commensurate with experience and competitive with our sector.
